Payment Privacy

Total secrecy starts before the vault

Your encrypted files mean nothing if your bank statement says "Delete Upon Death." Here's how to pay without leaving a trace.

Choose your privacy level

Different methods for different threat models. Most people are fine with Level 2. Choose based on who you're hiding from.

Method Privacy No ID No Bank Trail No Digital Trail
Standard Card ●●○○○
Virtual Card (Privacy.com) ●●●○○
Cash-Bought Prepaid ●●●●○
Bitcoin ●●●○○
Monero ●●●●●

Discrete card payment

Good enough for most. Your statement shows nothing identifiable.

Standard Credit/Debit Card

Privacy: Medium

Your bank statement shows "DUD DIGITAL SERVICES" — a generic merchant name that reveals nothing about the nature of the purchase. This provides plausible deniability for casual observers.

Zero friction Instant activation Bank knows you paid us Subpoena-able

Best for: People who want convenience and aren't concerned about determined legal or forensic investigation. Sufficient if you're hiding from family, employers, or casual snoops.

Cash-purchased prepaid card

The sweet spot. High privacy, low effort.

Prepaid Visa/Mastercard

Privacy: High

Buy a prepaid card with cash. No ID required for cards under $500 in most jurisdictions. The card isn't linked to your identity, and cash leaves no trail.

How to do it

  1. Go to any grocery store, pharmacy, or convenience store
  2. Buy a Visa or Mastercard gift card (not store-specific) — $400, $500, or $1000
  3. Pay with cash
  4. Use that card at checkout. Billing address can be anything.
No ID required under $500 Cash = no bank record Available everywhere Store security cameras

Pro tip: Buy the card at a store you don't normally visit, not near your home or work. Don't use loyalty cards or digital payments for anything else in the same transaction.

Cryptocurrency

Digital payment without banks. Privacy depends on which coin.

Monero (XMR) — Recommended

Privacy: Maximum

Monero is specifically designed for privacy. Unlike Bitcoin, transactions are untraceable by default. Sender, receiver, and amount are all hidden using ring signatures, stealth addresses, and RingCT.

How to do it

  1. Download a Monero wallet (Feather Wallet for desktop, Cake Wallet for mobile)
  2. Acquire XMR via a no-KYC exchange (LocalMonero, TradeOgre) or swap from BTC
  3. Send to our Monero address at checkout
  4. Transaction confirms in ~20 minutes. Untraceable.
Cryptographically untraceable No blockchain analysis possible No personal info required Learning curve if new to crypto

Bitcoin (BTC)

Privacy: Medium-High

Bitcoin is pseudonymous, not anonymous. Every transaction is recorded on a public blockchain. Sophisticated analysis can sometimes link transactions to identities, especially if you bought BTC through a KYC exchange.

Widely available No bank involvement Public blockchain Chain analysis exists

If using Bitcoin: Acquire through non-KYC methods (Bitcoin ATM with cash, peer-to-peer). Use a fresh wallet. Consider CoinJoin mixing first.

Hide your connection too

Payment privacy is only half the equation. Your ISP and network can see which sites you visit.

Access via Tor

The Tor network routes your connection through multiple encrypted relays, hiding your IP address and location. Our .onion address is hosted directly on Tor — your traffic never touches the regular internet.

Use a disposable email

Your email is only used for dead man's switch check-ins. It doesn't need to be traceable to you.

Recommended: ProtonMail (free, encrypted), SimpleLogin (aliases), Guerrilla Mail (temporary), or let us generate a vault-specific inbox for you at checkout.

We can't see your payment either

Our payment processor handles transactions. For crypto payments we use claim codes — we see the code, not who generated it. Your vault is just an encrypted blob tied to a hashed username. Even internally, there's no way to connect a payment to a person to a vault.
